We’ve launched 6 new posters to help more people living in care homes to Thrive!
As we mark two years since the launch of our Thriving in Residential Care research, we’ve created 6 downloadable posters for care providers, to help bring the findings to more care homes.
Our research highlighted six key ways that older people can thrive in a care home – Thrive Relationally, Actively, Inclusively, Securely, with Dignity and Healthily.
Each new poster spotlights one of these six ‘Dimensions of Thriving’.
The posters can be printed and put up on display in care settings, as well as used on a one-to-one basis.
We hope that they will spark open conversations about what it means to thrive in a care home, and how this can be achieved!
Explore the posters by theme:
Thrive Relationally focuses on building connections, making friends, and staying close to those who matter most.
“The enjoyment of saying, ‘Good morning,’ ‘good morning,’ ‘good morning,’ ‘good morning.’ [Imitating different voices] …I think a feeling of that you are part of a community.”
Tom, aged 92
Thrive Actively focuses on getting involved in the activities, hobbies and experiences that bring joy and a sense of purpose.
“Instead of being miserable at home and nothing to do, …plenty of things to do here…Occupy my mind.”
Wally, aged 93
Thrive Inclusively is all about celebrating your identity in a place where you feel valued and respected.
“We have made an environment where somebody feels so safe that at age 82… he’s been able to come out [as gay]… I thought my job is done…if this environment is safe enough that somebody feels that they can do that, this environment is correct.”
Jay, care home manager
Thrive Securely means reassuring you that you are safe, comfortable and able to access support when you need.
“I’ve been here a year now… So, this is my home… When I get into that bed at night, I know I’m safe. And I know if I’m not well someone will come in. It’s a lovely feeling… And just contentment, really. And they’re so kind.”
Irene, aged 81
Thrive with Dignity focuses on receiving care that respects your choices, comfort and independence.
“The carers are a wonderful bunch. And you can see how dependent I am on them… unfortunately, I have to wear pads. So, they’re a big part of me wearing pads. I hoped I would never have to… so I am very, very dependent on the carers, who, here, I must say do a wonderful job.”
Fifi, age 84
Thrive Healthily is all about supporting your heath and wellbeing through good food, medications, and care staff noticing when you might need more support.
“When I was at home… it used to take me an hour and a half to get a cup of tea. And I lived for a fortnight on brown bread, Marmite and oranges… I was lacking good food.”
Suzanne, aged 98
